Choosing a Maternity Support Belt

By the end of the first trimester, women begin to notice their growing baby belly. Very minimal abdominal support (if any) is needed at this stage.

However, light support can be achieved by wearing a Belly Sock. Belly Sock is a comfortable fabric band that provides light abdominal support while allowing women to continue wearing their non-maternity pants.

As the pregnancy continues into the second trimester and beyond, stronger support relieves the increasing pressure off the abdomen and lower back. The Gabrialla Maternity Support Belt (Medium), the Belly Bra, and the Adjustable Prenatal Cradle (also known as "Best Cradle") offer a solid support system. The three support systems differ in design. The Gabrialla provides support by providing a support band around the lower abdomen and back. The Prenatal Cradle/Best Cradle provides a band around the abdomen and back as well as shoulder straps to support the bands around the abdomen. The Belly Bra combines the comfort of a sports bra and the support of a maternity belt into a single comfortable supportive camisole.

Some women experience severe joint pain particularly in the SI joints due to ligaments stretching (caused by elevated hormone levels). A good maternity support belt can help alleviate some of this pain. Unfortunately, the problem cannot be completely eliminated until hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels.

Severe back and abdominal strain require strong support systems. The Gabrialla Maternity Belt (Firm) offers just that type of support. With a 9" wide back and 4 spring metal stays as well as 2 additional pulls for better adjustment, this belt is recommended for women with serious back pain. This belt is also ideal for women carrying more than one child.

Like more products, maternity support belts should be chosen based on individual preferences and needs, as well as, recommendations from a physician.
